Bukulula Action for Children and Young People Uganda (ACYP)

Our History

Bukulula Action for Children and Young People is a non profit registered organisation in Uganda. It has been a dedicated charity for vulnerable children and young people since its inception in 2010. We began as the voluntary group; Action for Children and Young People (ACYP) in Bukulula, Kalungu District, Uganda.

While celebrating our 15th anniversary, we adopted our current name; Bukulula Action for Children and Young People. This change reflects where we started and our deep roots in the community. It also marks our continued commitment to serving children, young people and their families in the deprived villages of our communities and neighboring areas. ACYP began by working with three vulnerable families. The first family was headed by a 15-year-old looking after five siblings after the death of their parents. The second family of seven orphans who were out of school was headed by a 79-year-old, and a homeless family of six with three HIV-positive individuals. ACYP volunteers enabled children from these families to access education, nutrition, health, and shelter, and helped caregivers to start income-generating activities. The success stories of these families pushed the ACYP team to reach more families.

At the initial stage, ACYP implemented four core program areas: education, health, nutrition, and economic strengthening. In 2016, we realised the value of empowering children and young people to become agents of change, improving their lives and those of their families and communities. This was only possible when they were protected and participated in all issues affecting them. To ensure a holistic approach to community development and the empowerment of children and young people, we adopted two more areas: child protection and environmental sustainability. With this holistic strategic approach, our children and families have benefited from quality, affordable, and sustainable education; comprehensive and sustainable health; sustainable food systems; income-generating activities; child protection; and environmental protection.
